• Handrail Height: The top surface of the handrail must be installed between 34 and 38 inches high, measured vertically from the stair nosing’s edge to the surface of the handrail. This range is established to ensure a person can comfortably grasp the rail without having to stoop excessively or reach uncomfortably high.

• Handrail Bracket Distance: Handrails must not project more than 4.5 inches on either side of the stairway. This is to prevent crowding the walking path and ensure a clear, continuous pathway along the entire length of the railing.

• Clearance from Wall: Handrails need at least 1.5 inches of clearance from the wall, measured to the closest side. 

Each step should be intact, no broken or loose boards. The handrail should have enough brackets to provide enough strength. While there may be no specific regulation regarding the distance between brackets, it is suggested distance between two brackets be no more than 4 ft.
