You have nothing to lose if you negotiate with the other parties that you are willing to pay, but really can't afford to pay the full amount. Many doctors/hospitals are willing to give you a good discount, if they know that you are paying out of your own pocket. The medical system in the USA is not designed for people to pay by themselves.
