Brown University

In the Early Decision round, 4,562 students applied under Brown University’s binding Early Decision program. During a year in which many Ivy League schools received fewer Early applications, Brown’s Early Decision application tally marked an 8% increase from last year’s 4,230 ED applicants. Of this year’s applicants, 800 earned admission. By our math, this marks an ED admit rate of 17.5% for this year’s applicant pool — the lowest in the university’s history. It also marked the fifth consecutive year Brown’s admit rate dropped in the Early round: from 18.2% for the Class of 2023, 21% for the Class of 2022, 21.9% for the Class of 2021, 22.1% for the Class of 2020.

In the Regular Decision round for the Class of 2024, a round impacted by the novel coronavirus pandemic, 32,232 students applied to Brown. This same figure stood at 34,444 for the Class of 2023 so the Regular Decision pool didn’t mark an all-time record at Brown. Rather, it was the second largest RD applicant pool in the school’s history. Brown’s third largest RD applicant pool was just two years ago when 31,936 students applied in the Regular Decision round to the Providence, Rhode Island-based university. But now that we’ve taken a trip down memory lane to put the RD application tally for the Class of 2024 in historical perspective, we should mention that 1,733 students earned admission in the RD round this year. This means the RD admit rate for Brown’s Class of 2024 stood at 5.4%, up only slightly from last year’s RD admit rate, which was the lowest in the school’s history.

Among Brown’s Early Decision admits to its Class of 2024, 17% will be the first in their families to attend college — up by a wide margin from last year’s 11% of ED admits who identified as first-generation college students. Additionally, 44% of admits identified as students of color. And 62% of admits require financial aid, a figure up 5% from last year. ED admits hail from 40 of our nation’s states as well as from Washington, DC and Puerto Rico. 43 nations are represented by the ED admits — led by China, the United Kingdom, Canada, India, and South Korea in no particular order. 20 of the ED admits were accepted to the Program in Liberal Medical Education (PLME).

Among all admits between Early Decision and Regular Decision to Brown’s Class of 2024, 55% identify as students of color. 18% will be the first in their families to graduate from college. 70% of students intend to apply for financial aid. 96% of admits are in the top 10% of their high school classes. Students hail from all 50 states with the most represented states being California, New York, New Jersey, Massachusetts, and Texas. Among international admits, the most represented nations are: Canada, China, Singapore, South Korea, Thailand, and the United Kingdom. 1,656 high school are represented by the admitted students. The top intended majors are computer science, engineering, economics, political science, applied math, English, neuroscience, biology, biochemistry and molecular biology, and international and public affairs.

Columbia University

In total, between Early Decision and Regular Decision, Columbia University received 40,084 applications to the Class of 2024 — 4,318 of whom applied in the Early Decision round. Of this total pool of applicants to Columbia Class of 2024, a pool that is down significantly from last year’s record tally, 2,544 students earned admission. And of these 2,544 students who were offered admission, 1,492 chose to matriculate. By our arithmetic, it appears that 79 students were admitted from the waitlist as back in March, 2,465 applicants were admitted and now the count is 2,544. The overall acceptance rate for Columbia’s Class of 2024 stands at 6.1%.

Of the students admitted to Columbia’s Class of 2024, 95% were in the top 18% of their high school classes. 17% will be the first in their families to attend college. 51% identify as female, while 49% identify as male. 70 nations are represented among admits as are all 50 of the U.S. states. Among international students, who account for 12% of all admits, the most represented nations are: China, the United Kingdom, South Korea, Hong Kong, India, Brazil, Turkey, Thailand, and Singapore. Among all admits, 15% of admitted students are African American, 32% are Asian or Pacific Islander, 20% are Hispanic, 3% are Native American, 54% are White, and 2% are unknown. 17% will receive Pell Grants. 1500 and 1560 mark the middle 58% score range for admitted students — the equivalent range of 34 and 35 on the ACT.

Cornell University

In the Early Decision round for Cornell University’s Class of 2024, 6,615 students submitted applications to the school, pledging their binding commitments to attend if offered admission. Of these applicants, 1,576 students earned admission to the Ithaca, New York-based institution. This marks an ED admit rate of 23.8% for Cornell’s Class of 2024. And just how do these figures stack up compared to previous years? 22.6% of ED applicants earned admission to Cornell’s Class of 2023, 24.3% to Cornell’s Class of 2022, and 25.6% to Cornell’s Class of 2021. So while Cornell’s ED admit rate did not set a new benchmark this year, it was the second lowest ED admit rate in the university’s history…not too shabby. And applications? Well, they were up this ED cycle. The 6,615 applications marked a year-over-year increase from the Class of 2023 of 7.4%. Applications were also up by 4.6% for the ED round for the Class of 2022. So since applications were up but the admit rate also rose, it means Cornell just admitted more students this ED cycle. In fact, the school admitted more students in the ED round for the Class of 2024 than ever before. Additionally, 21.7% of ED applicants to the Class of 2024 were deferred, a figure down from 24.3% for the Class of 2023.

And while Cornell broke with a longstanding tradition by not reporting its Regular Decision data in March, fear not as we’ve got this data for our readers since it was published in August. In total, between Early Decision and Regular Decision, Cornell received 51,500 applications to the Class of 2024. This marked an increase of around 2,000 applications from last year. And the increased applications drove down the overall acceptance rate — from 10.9% for the Class of 2023 to 10.7% for the Class of 2024.

Highlights of Cornell University’s Class of 2024

In the Early Decision round, 51.6% of admits were women. 39.7% of admits identify as students of color. 22.1% of admits were legacies, a figure that is on par with last Early cycle. Recruited athletes, representing 12.1% of all ED admits, however, is down 1.4% from the Class of 2023. International students comprised 13.6% of ED admits, constituting a jump from last year.

Among the total pool of students who were admitted and opted to enroll in Cornell’s Class of 2024, 15.5% will be the first in their families to attend college — a figure up by 2.1% from last year. Students of color constitute 51.7% of the incoming class — a figure that is up by 3.2% from last year. Underrepresented minorities constitute 26.9% of the incoming class — a figure up by 1.3% from last year (to be clear, Asian Americans, as an example, are students of color but are not considered underrepresented minorities in college admissions). And students in the Cornell Class of 2024 hail from 48 of the 50 states; it seems Cornell struck out securing students from both North Dakota and Arkansas.

Dartmouth College

In the Early Decision round at Dartmouth College for the Class of 2024, 526 students plus an additional 21 QuestBridge students earned admission. These students were drawn from an Early Decision applicant pool of 2,069 students. It marked the third largest ED applicant pool in Dartmouth’s history, though the school received more ED applications for the Class of 2023 (2,474) and for the Class of 2022 (2,270). Prior to the Class of 2022, the school never breached the 2,000 ED applicant pool benchmark, though Dartmouth came awful close with the Class of 2021 when 1,999 students applied under binding Early Decision. Dartmouth anticipates that the Early Decision admits to the Class of 2024 will ultimately comprise 46% of the entire class.

Between the Early Decision and Regular Decision rounds — and with the RD round impacted by the novel coronavirus pandemic — 1,881 students were offered admission. This figure compares to 1,876 for the Class of 2023, 1,925 for the Class of 2022, and 2,092 for the Class of 2021. In fact, the 1,881 admitted students marked Dartmouth’s second smallest pool of admitted students in at least the last 17 years (or since we started compiling the data for our readers — hey, we’ve been at it a long time!). And how does the overall acceptance rate stack up against prior years? The 8.8% overall admit rate to Dartmouth’s Class of 2024 compares to a 7.9% admit rate for the Class of 2023, an 8.7% admit rate for the Class of 2022, and a 10.4% admit rate for the Class of 2021. By our records, it marked the third lowest overall admit rate in the College on the Hill’s long history. So while it wasn’t a banner year for Dartmouth, it was a pretty good one nonetheless.

Highlights of Dartmouth College’s Class of 2024

In the Early Decision round, admitted students hail from 47 of the 50 nifty United States from 13 original colonies. Admits also hail from Washington, DC and 28 nations around our globe. The most represented country outside of the United States is China. 15% of admits will be the first in their families to attend college. 35% of admits identify as students of color. Legacies comprise 15% of admits. Recruited athletes comprise 25% of admits, a number that’s way too high if you ask us. Additionally, more than 20% of ED admits are likely to graduate as valedictorians or salutatorians. The mean SAT score among ED admits is 1481, while the mean composite ACT score is 33.

Among the total pool of admits — a pool that includes Early Decision and Regular Decision admitted students — all 50 states in our union are represented in addition to 71 nations from around the world. 96% of admits are in the top 10% of their graduating classes. The average SAT score is 1501, while the average ACT score is 33. 62% of admits applied for financial aid, while it’s anticipated that 17% will be eligible for Pell grants. These figures can, however, change since economic turmoil hit in March with the novel coronavirus pandemic.

Harvard University

In the Early Action round, 6,424 students applied in the hope of earning admission to Harvard University’s Class of 2024. Of these applicants, 895 earned admission under the school’s non-binding policy. Overall, between Early Action and Regular Decision, Harvard admitted 4.92% of applicants to the Class of 2024. In all, 40,248 students submitted applications to the Cambridge, Massachusetts-based institution — 1,980 of whom got in between the two rounds (1,085 in Regular Decision joined the 895 Early Action admits). The 4.92% overall admit rate is up slightly from last year when 4.5% of applicants to Harvard’s Class of 2023 earned admission.

Highlights of Harvard University’s Class of 2024

Among Early admits to the Harvard Class of 2024, 51.7% were women, while 48.3% were men. This marks a jump of 0.5% for women from just last year. Also of note, 57.4% of this year’s admits who intend to major in the physical sciences are women — a figure markedly up from last year’s 52.9% and 33% for the Class of 2022. How drastically — and swiftly — change can happen for the better! By ethnicity, 12.7% of EA admits are African American, 24% are Asian American, 11.1% are Latinx, and 1.3% are Native American and Native Hawaiians. In fact, representation increased among all ethnic groups from last year with the notable exception of Asian Americans; Asian American representation declined by 2.1%). Additionally, 9.6% of EA admits are international students — a figure that is down from 11.2% last year but we expect will rise under America’s next presidential administration.

Among the overall pool, African American students represent 14.8% of the admits to the Harvard Class of 2024, Latinx students 12.7%, Asian Americans 24.5%, and Native Americans and Native Hawaiians 2.2%. Among these groups, representation remained the same from last year for African American students, increased for Latinx students, decreased for Asian American students, and decreased for Native American and Native Hawaiian students. Women comprise 51.6% of the admitted pool. 13 admits are veterans of America’s military and 47 expressed an interest in ROTC. Students hail from all 50 nifty United States from 13 original colonies and from 92 nations around the globe. First generation college students constitute 19.4% of admits, while 19% of admits are from low-income backgrounds — figures that are both up from last year.

University of Pennsylvania

Every streak must come to an end. Heck, even Cal Ripken Jr. eventually missed a baseball game. And so it was at the University of Pennsylvania this year when the school offered admission to 19.7% of Early Decision applicants to the Class of 2024. It marked the first time in nearly a decade when the school’s ED admit rate didn’t drop (the figure stood at 18% for the Class of 2023). In all, 6,453 students applied to UPenn under the school’s binding Early Decision policy. Of these applicants, 1,269 earned admission — to fill 53% of seats in UPenn’s Class of 2024. So, yes, by the time one applies in the Regular Decision round, there are only 47% of available seats left in the game of musical chairs.

Among the combined Early Decision and Regular Decision pools, a total of 3,404 students earned admission. These admits were selected out of a pool of 42,205 applicants to the Philadelphia, Pennsylvania-based institution. By our arithmetic, this mean that UPenn’s overall admit rate for the Class of 2024 stands at 8.06%.

Highlights of University of Pennsylvania’s Class of 2024

Among the Early Decision admits to UPenn’s Class of 2024, 13% are international with 50 nations represented. But all U.S. states are not represented among ED admits — only 48 of them. The states most represented are the usual suspects: New York, New Jersey, Pennsylvania, and California. 52% of ED admits identify as minorities, which is up from the 48% of students who identified as such last year. 54% of ED admits identified as female, a figure up by 3% from last year. 10% of admits are first generation, a figure down 1% from last year. And 24% are legacies, the children and/or grandchildren of UPenn alumni, a figure up 1% from last year.

Among the combined pool of Early Decision and Regular Decision admits, they hail from all 50 states in our union in addition to Washington, DC, Puerto Rico, Guam, and the U.S. Virgin Islands. The most represented states among total admits are New York, New Jersey, California, Texas, Pennsylvania, and Florida. 14% of admits are international students, hailing from 98 nations around our world. 53% identify as female, 47% identify as male. 15% are first-generation college students. 13% are legacies. 20% qualify for Pell Grants. The middle 50% of admits’ SAT and ACT scores are 1460-1560 and 33-35, respectively.

Princeton University

In the Early Action cycle, 791 students earned admission to Princeton University’s Class of 2024. In the combined pool, between Early Action and Regular Decision, Princeton offered admission to 1,823 students to the Class of 2024. By our arithmetic, this means that 1,032 students earned admission to Princeton’s Class of 2024 in the Regular Decision round. Hey, it doesn’t take a Princeton mathematician like the late John Nash to figure that one out! The university received, in total, 32,836 applications to its Class of 2024. So, using our math skills again, we conclude its overall admit rate stands at 5.55%, a figure down from 5.8% for the class of 2023 and on par with the overall admit rate for the Class of 2022. Princeton anticipates that their Class of 2024 will consist of approximately 1,296 students.

Among Early Action admits to the Princeton Class of 2024, 11% are international students, hailing from 33 nations around our world. 13% will be the first in their families to attend college. 16% are from low-income backgrounds. 48% are U.S. citizens or permanent residents who self-identify as students of color. Students from the U.S. hail from 48 of the 50 nifty United States from 13 original colonies.

Among the total pool of Princeton applicants to the Class of 2024 — between Early Action and Regular Decision — 61% are U.S. citizens who identify as students of color. 17% will be the first in their families to attend college. More than 20% come from low-income backgrounds. 60% of admits will receive financial aid. 51% of admits identify as women, while 49% identify as men. 63% hail from public high schools. 10% of admits are legacies. Admits hail from 48 of the 50 states in addition to Washington, DC and Puerto Rico. 64 nations are represented among the admitted students. Nearly 24% indicated they wish to study engineering, while 15% indicated an interest in the humanities (with 11% undecided).

Yale University

796 students earned admission in the Early Action round to Yale University’s Class of 2024. These students were accepted out of a pool of 5,777 applicants. Yale’s EA admit rate for the Class of 2024 thus stands at 13.78%, a figure that is up from last year’s 13.2% for the Class of 2023 but down from the 14.7% figure for the Class of 2022. Of the 5,777 applicants, 56% were deferred and 29% were denied admission. 1% withdrew their applications at some point during the process or submitted incomplete applications. In addition, 87 students were admitted through QuestBridge, a figure not included in the 796 student tally.

Between the Early Action and Regular Decision rounds, 35,220 students applied to Yale’s Class of 2024, a figure down from last year’s record tally of 36,306. And while the total applications were also higher for the Class of 2022 at 35,306, this year’s total applications marked the third highest tally in Yale’s storied history. Of the 35,220 applicants to this year’s Class of 2024, 2,304 earned admission (200 students were admitted through QuestBride, a new record). The overall admit rate to Yale’s Class of 2024 thus stands at 6.54%, a figure that is up from last year’s 5.9% record overall admit rate. Yale anticipates the Class of 2024 will bring Yale’s total undergraduate enrollment to 6,250 — or a 15% increase in just the last two years.

Admits to the Yale Class of 2024 hail from all 50 states in our union in addition to Washington, DC and Puerto Rico. International students hail from 72 nations around the globe. Over 1,500 high schools are represented by these admits — who expressed an interest in more than 75 of the academic programs available at Yale. This year marks the fourth year in a row that Yale has opted to expand the incoming class size.
