According to Materialism, all phenomena have material/physical bases. History is a phenomenon, therefore it has material bases. The historian needs to dutifully trace or reduce history to these bases and records it from there. This record is supposed to be definitive and unique.

One shouldn't avoid this principle by saying that history and history recording are not the same thing. Even if they are not the same thing, it is the historian's duty to bring them together.
