The fame of the orchestra mainly attributed to 1 man, Joseph Keilberth, who recruited many talented Czech musicians after WWII to build the ensemble. Keilberth himself is an excellent conductor whose recording at Bayreuth is still considered one of the best Wagner Ring cycles. It is amazing that a small town like Bamberg which only has less than 80k population can have such a high quality symphony orchestra. Classical music in Germany has the similar status as the pop music in US....
