Marshal of the Royal Air Force Sir Arthur Travers Harris, 1st Baronet, GCB, OBE, AFC (13 April 1892 – 5 April 1984), commonly known as "Bomber" Harris by the press and often within the RAF as "Butch" Harris,[a] was Air Officer Commanding-in-Chief (AOC-in-C) RAF Bomber Command during the height of the Anglo-American strategic bombing campaign against Nazi Germany in the Second World War.

Early life
[edit]Harris was born on 13 April 1892, at Cheltenham, Gloucestershire, where his parents were staying while his father George Steel Travers Harris, a government engineer in India, was on home leave.[2] With his father in India most of the time, Harris grew up without a sense of solid roots and belonging; he spent much of his later childhood with the family of a Kent rector, the Reverend C E Graham-Jones, whom he later recalled fondly.[3] Harris was educated at Allhallows School in Devon, while his two elder brothers were educated at the more prestigious Sherborne and Eton, respectively; according to biographer Henry Probert, this was because Sherborne and Eton were expensive and "there was not much money left for number three".[4]

Cast: Albert Finney as Churchill, Vanessa Redgrave as Clementine—just a perfect pair! This is a beautifully written film incorporating several real Churchill quotes. The incidents are largely based on fact.
This film is remarkable both for context and relevance. It illustrates the same reluctance of the British people to face reality while simultaneously believing all will be well. The 1930’s were not dissimilar to nowadays which again very few seem to be concerned about. Unfortunately today there is no Churchill to pull us together. Not only is it great entertainment with many well known actors and beautiful scenery but so appropriate. Should be watched by everyone. Thanks.
@patmillar961 Thanks for your input. I’m a retired British Army Officer who emigrated in 1996 - so am rather out of touch with what is happening in UK - but as I read how people seem to be complaining constantly, the reality is that only by doing something will circumstances improve. To do this we have to realize Britain must WAKE UP TO THE FACT that we are failing. Regenerate a will to lead and instill pride. This will depend on young people being given opportunities to take responsibility and perhaps by so doing others can achieve their potential. Leadership is not always popular but subjugation is far worse. Ignore the easy option. Think of a better place.
