Lorcaserin, from Arena Pharmaceuticals, works on the brain to control appetite in the same way as fenfluramine, the fen-phen component that was withdrawn from the market for damaging heart valves. But trials so far indicate that lorcaserin does not cause the heart valve problem.
And a potential advantage for lorcaserin is that it is a new drug and so would not face potential competition from generics.
