英文小鲜(8):失败乃成功之母

中国人说的"失败乃成功之母"是句俗语。俗语即是凡夫俗子用的"微言"，但这句微言却饱含大义: 悲壮的失败者，契而不舍，最终达到成功。这点大家夥儿都明白。

偶然net surfing 时，看到有个中国的高中英文学习网站提出这样的问题: 用英语"失败乃成功之母"怎么说？并给出了如下答案:

1. Failure is the mother of success

2. Failure teaches success.

3. Our courses are the door to success in English.

4. A good lather is half a shave.

第一句是直译，第二句差强人意，后两句是鸡同鸭讲。当然，一个中国的中学网站做到这一步已属难能可贵。

记得以前也见过英文中有这样的词组: success through failure，它饱含着同样的哲理。当文化在不同语言之间交流时，直译往往不能达意，即使字面上说得过去，许多文化内涵很可能流失。但有时直译也很传神， Failure is the mother of success 应该是不错的直译，不过我个人认为 success through failure 更好些。原因有二。原因一是英文中已有这一表达，英美人士容易接受；原因二由下面给出。

其实关于"成功"的谚语英文中也有: Necessity is the mother of success (有时也被说成 necessity is the mother of invention). 我们比较"失败乃成功之母"和"Necessity is the mother of success"，可以看出英美文化少说教多实用，而博大精深的中华文化富哲理讲内涵。实用本无可厚非，但过于实用的老美将好好的"Necessity is the mother of success"一句加了下联，连起来就读成这样: Necessity is the mother of success. The father is unknown.

要是将"失败乃成功之母"译成"Necessity is the mother of success"，老美是否也会问: "Then who is the father?"
