【美国理财点滴之一】如何从401k取钱而不被罚款
挨踢的轱轳 (2009-05-04 12:53:01) 评论 (3)第一个想谈的就是容易被忽略的和401(k)有关的一些规定。当前金融危机导致美国的失业率节节攀升,对于那些失去工作的人来讲,也许急需资金来度过难关。从401(k)提前支取资金(early withdral)一般都不会被鼓励,其中的道理我就不重复了。但我觉得也要看具体情况而定,如果已接近退休年龄,或者实在也不能靠401(k)退休,提前支取也不是不可为。而如果已接近退休却所存有限的话,那就更应破釜沉舟了,干脆将savings全花光或藏在mattress下。美国有两种人退休了以后的生活最稳定,一种是有很多钱的人,一种是没有钱的人,有点钱但又不多的中产阶级是最亏的,估计是那个国家都一样。闲话少扯,言归正传。一般情况下提前支取401(k),也就是在满59岁半前支取是要付10%的罚款的(early-withdrawal penalty),除非是完全残疾(totally disabled)、有超过AGI 7.5%的医疗账单等等苛刻的条件,而且还要看雇主有没有这样的offer。
但关于401(k),其实所有qualified plan (包括401k,profit sharing, money purchase palns and 403b plans)都一样,还有这样的规定,如果你离开了你服务的公司,并且离开发生在你55或55岁以后,那么你支取401k就不用付10%的penalty。当然死罪免了,活罪不免,income tax 还是要交的。

That's right. So for those people with low income, it makes more sense to contribute to Roth IRA or Roth 401k instead of their traditional versions, unless you believe that Uncle Sam would be nice enough to low your tax rate when you get retired.
if your income is low when you withdraw the 401k, the income tax will be less?
Some friend asked if this rule applies to the balance rolled over from the 401k account(s) with previous employer(s). And he actually checked with IRS and the answer is yes, it applies to the whole account balance including what was rolled over. Thanks! Anything related to $$ and IRS is kind of complicated and I do not intend to cover all aspects of a topic. My purpose is to bring up the subjects so that others may get to know them.
