France (9) - Chartres Cathedral

(2010-04-10 09:04:58) 下一个
After finishing my work at Rennes, we were going to Paris today with a stop in Chartres to visit its cathedral. Since we couldn't find any locker at the train station, we had to haul all our luggage with us during the visit. Good thing we travel light.

1. Walking toward Chartres Cathedral.

2. Chartres Cathedral. According to legend, since 876 the cathedral's site has housed a tunic that was said to have belonged to the Blessed Virgin Mary. It is believed to be the one that Mary wore when she gave birth to Christ.

3. Built around 1200 AD, the Chartres labyrinth is called "The Road to Jerusalem", denoting both the Holy Land on Earth, and the Celestial City in Heaven. Walking the labyrinth is considered both a physical and spiritual journey to some people.

4. Chartres is noted for its many large stained glass windows.

5. There are lots of stone figures inside the cathedral.

6. More windows.

7. The side of the cathedral.

(To be continued)
