      百香果, 产于美洲的热带及亚热带地区。原产于巴西，巴拉圭。1610年间传入欧洲，当时西班牙传教士发现其花的形状极似基督之十字架刑具，柱头上3个分裂，极似3根钉，花瓣红斑、恰似耶稣头部被荆棘刺出血形象，5个花药，恰似受伤伤痕，西班牙人以Passioflos名之，直译之为受难花 (Passion Flower)。 西番莲的果汁常被用作香料，加在其他果汁中。
      日本人称“百香果”为“pashonfurutsu”（passion fruits），日本名因为其花长得像钟表，又是时计草的同类，故称为“时计果”。英文称时计草为“passion flower”对时计果称之为“passion fruit” 。此“ passion ”不是“热情”的意思。
   在原产地的巴西称为“ maracujá（马拉库加），秘鲁则称为“maracuya”（马拉克呀）、中南美各地称为“ granadilla”（格拉纳迪拉）、夏威夷称之为“ liliko?i”（莉莉可怡）。汉语的百香果完全是英语的“passion”的谐音字加上果字。该名称又从台湾带回日本后日本根据台湾名称的谐音成了“passhonfurutsu”了。
    在中国大陆多称为“西番莲”（学名：Passiflora edulis），也有的地方叫百香果、热情果、鸡蛋果。 1610年间传入欧洲，当时西班牙传教士发现其花的形状极似基督之十字架刑具，
    此果在中文地区的常见不同名称：
    台湾：百香果，因台湾于1907年由日本人田代安定从石川植物园引进，野化，所以也称时计果（台语，sî-kè-kó），时钟瓜（台语，sî-tsing-kue），客家人称tokeisō（时计草日语音）。
   中国大陆：西番莲、热情果、百香果、鸡蛋果
   香港：热情果、百香果、西番果、巴西果（但巴西坚果也被称为巴西果，易混淆）。
