about Virtual subdirectory

We know we can create a virtual subdirectory for a website so to virtually extend a real physical drive scope. But this can be only recognized by IE and other browser programs.

Is there any way to make a virtual dirctory for PC operating system to recognize, so all program, not only browsers, can use it. Sound like mapping network drive, once mapped, all program will know it as we have one more physic drive.

So, my question is: When we make mapping netwwork arrangement, can we be allowed to use a real physical directory name instead of the only one letter drive name? For example, can we make our 'c:msworddocument' as a virtual subdirectory to 'c:...ownerMy Documents' and assign it a name as 'my word Document'. So, when we use 'c:...ownerMy Documentsmy word Document', it really points to 'c:msworddocument'. And all my local pc programs can can also recognize this new subdirectory.

It seems to me very simple and reasonable to do this kind of mapping. Why does Windows can not do it? Or because I don't how to do it? Any body know this topic?

Thank to discuss.
