1.“blue moon”是一种非正式的用法，意思是“很长一段时间、非常罕见的事”。
“Blue moon”缘何有这种意思呢？从天文学角度讲，“blue moon”是指一个月中的第二次满月。由于月运周期（月亮绕地球一周）是29.5天， 而根据日历，每个月大多都有至少30天，因此大约每32个月左右则会轮到一次“blue moon”，这是一段相当长的时间，所以自19世纪后期以来，“blue moon”就有了“很少发生（的事）”的意思。
另一种解释是当球大气层中悬浮着特定的灰尘和烟尘颗粒达到一定浓度的时候，月亮也会呈现出蓝色，这可是真正的 “blue moon”。这种“blue moon”就和某个月出现几次满月没有关系了，其本身也不是满月的意思，因此也没有什么周期性可言，但这种现象非常罕见。因此我们在日常生活中就会这样使用这个句子 “It is only once in a blue moon that you get an opportunity like that”来形容机会难得。在例如 “I see her once in a blue moon.”意思是“我难得见她一次。”
2.Over the moon源于一首欢快的儿歌：“Hey, diddle, diddle/The cat and the fiddle/The cow jumped over the moon/The little dog laughed/To see such sport/And the dish ran away with the spoon.”（嘿，快摇、快摇/猫咪和小提琴/母牛跳过月亮/小狗看到哈哈笑/碟子带着汤勺不见了。）
儿歌虽然毫无意义，但是儿歌中的over the moon倒被大人采用，用来形容“兴高采烈”。到了上世纪70年代，over the moon常用于体育赛事，指赢得比赛后大家“欣喜若狂”。
例句：The whole team is over the moon at winning the competition.（全队因赢得这场比赛而欢呼雀跃。）
