家庭的力量

在离开笔者住处不远的地方，住着这样一户人家，男主人叫John Crowley. 1998年，John 在 Bristol-Myers Squibb Cogong公司做marketing工作。这一年，对John来说是很不幸的一年。他的两个孩子，Megan和Patrick被诊断为一种叫做Pompe disease, a rare, life threatening disorder. Megan出生后仅一个星期就确诊，Patrick是四个月后被确诊。

2000年的三月，John做了个很大的决定，“It was right after the two year anniversary of the kids being diagnosed, and we were just frustrated with the pace of research and wanted to do someting" , John，辞去了工作。“I guess it was all th eemotions that you go through in a situation like that. It's not supposed to happen to you or your kids". John 决定要自己为孩子做些什么。他觉得自己没有太多的luxury时间。

当时，针对这个病，没有任何Food and Drug Administration 批准的治疗办法。

John成立了自己的一家公司：Novazyme Pharmaceuticals,从事这方面的研究。

一年，仅仅一年，公司的endowment达到了$27M。John把公司卖给了一家大许多的公司：Genzyme Therapentics, 并开始在Genzyme工作。

2003年，公司已经有了clinical trials的药。可惜，带着有些讽刺意义的是，医院拒绝了在John的孩子上进行治疗，因为这会“conflict of interest".

这年的圣诞夜，John收到了一个让全家兴奋的圣诞卡，一家医院，最后同意给他的孩子进行治疗。

经过治疗，虽然两个孩子没有根除疾病，但病情已经被控制住了。尤其是心脏恢复了健康。两个孩子也进入公学校和其他同一起上课。

John本人现在为Amicus Therapeutics的president and CEO, 圣比得医院的board of directors.

John的故事被编成了书，也上了电影。电影名字叫"Extraordinary Measures",由Harrison Ford主演。

总结自己的努力，John认为，一切来源于"the power of family".

"I think the first thing to realize is that in any health crisis for any family member, for children in particular, is that nobody's going to be better advocate for them than their parents".
