Wednesday, 7:05-8:00 AM  I woke up a bit early, and started dressing. There was only one shower, and eight other people were using it, so I skipped it and brushed my teeth. By that time, almost everyone else was taking showers, so I cleaned up my bunk and neatened my sleeping bag. Then, at 8:00am, I went to breakfast.

Wednesday, 9:30-10:00 AM   After breakfast, it was an all day hike. I went with my cabin mates to our meeting spot and waited for Cygnus. When Cygnus came, we started hiking. She talked about the difference between redwood and Douglas fir trees. To tell the difference, first you clap your hands with the needles in between. Redwood needles are flat and hurt less, but Douglas fir needles look more like circular brushes. Then, if you can’t test the needles, press your finger into the bark, or just look at it. Redwood bark is stringy in some places, making it feel a bit soft. Or, you put a fire really close to the bark and see how long it takes to burn. (This is not advisable.)

Wednesday, 11:00-11:59 AM  When we reached a clearing in the forest, we started building shelters. I made mine wedged between two trees and part of a tree trunk. The support was mostly the tree trunk and trees. The trees were redwoods, so there were lots of places to wedge fallen branches into. After I made my shelter, I started tearing strips from a plank to cover the holes in the roof. When an hour was up, everyone got a tour of the other shelters. I think mine’s was the best, because it took the longest to tear apart.

Wednesday, 1:00-1:30 PM  Lunch was short. There were turkey and cheese sandwiches. I got seconds on mine.

Wednesday, 3:00-4:00 PM  We came to Rattlesnake creek, and split up. One group tried to catch newts and salamanders, and the other group made rock face paints. To make them, all you have to do is get two wet rocks, preferably from a river, and grind them together. The colored water that drips from them is the paint. I collected rocks and tried to make a handimal. At about 3:55am, we started hiking back to camp. To get there quickly we played a game called RUN AND SCREAM!

Wednesday, 7:30-8:45 PM  At the campfire, there was a really funny skit. It was about two people and an invisible ball. So person #1 played with a ball, and handed it to the other person, person #2, for safekeeping. Person #2 bounced the ball around, and then threw it really high. Then Person #2 caught it in his mouth and accidentally swallowed it. Person #1 came back and learned about the swallowed ball, and revealed that it was made from spit.
